Mafia Wars Defense Rackets; Strategy Guide

Defense rackets are one of the 4 tiers in the new rackets system. At the time of this posting, there are 3 rackets available.

Each racket rewards 3 boosts (4 boosts if the tier is mastered) unlike the job rackets which only provide 2-3 boosts. With that said, here are the defense rackets:

Garbage Dump (master this to unlock Scrapyard):

Cost: 17 Influence
Time until completion: 44 hours
Reward: Boxer x3 (4 if racket is mastered): +38 fight defense
1 Experience Point
7% Racket Mastery (only shows 2% in picture because it was the last 2%)

Scrapyard (master this to unlock Toxic Waste Dump):

Cost: 38 Influence (I think - influence does not show in above screenshot since I was way over the cap)
Time until completion: 44 hours
Reward: Boxer x3 (4 if racket is mastered): +65 fight defense
1 Experience Point
4% Racket Mastery

Toxic Waste Dump

Cost: 128 Influence
Time until completion: 44 hours
Reward: Mr. Hot Sauce x3 (4 if racket is mastered): +100 fight defense
1 Experience Point
2% Racket Mastery

My Take

The defense rackets are a bit disappointing to say the least. Mr. Hot Sauce is actually a boost that could make a difference (+100 fight defense is significant), but at the cost (128 influence!) and the time investment (44 hours) for simply 3 boosts, this simply does not strike me as being worth it. The 128 influence requirement is the deal-breaker for me; you would actually have to point a significant number of stat points into influence to reach this requirement (even if you were going beyond your normal total by collecting influence rewards to push you past your cap, mentioned in the main rackets section).

Personally, I would rather not put 100 points into influence and instead put 100 stat points into defense - that way I would have + defense for every time I am attacked rather than just a few times every couple days.

I think to remedy the situation, influence should be a forced stat (i.e. unlocked by doing something in the game) rather than a stat you can freely put points into. For example:

- Give us +1 influence every 5 or 10 levels (if it was 1 influence every level, it would just reward power-levelers and energy accounts)
- Give us +1 or 2 influence for doing achievements. This would make getting these more worthwhile!
- Give us +1 influence every time we win 1,000 fights
- Give us +1 influence every time we help 100 friends

Additionally, offer +10 to max influence for 10 godfather points.

Just my 2 cents!

  1. bump into your blog when I google influence in Mafia Wars. I wonder if you've ever found your influence points disappearing after collecting your rackets?for example, I used to be able to shake 2 shipping company, 5 trucking company, and 2 taxi stands, now I could only shake down 6 trucking company. (No, My rackets hadn't burst at all!) quite frustrating!

    Is it a bug?

  2. Yup, happens to me at least once a day, while collecting (and restarting) my rackets one at a time.

But they really could have kept the game balance as it was just by having your influence rise by mastering racket jobs (and, Zynga being Zynga, GF points). That way they'd reward players for trying out different rackets. Instead the smart player will hit the 4 hour cash rackets to make money, then at Level 40, hit the Job Rackets for endless Truckers.

It is funny to think that this is a feature that gets blasted by new players for not being able to compete with the money-making power of Property Accounts; but has been nerfed at least twice for being too powerful.

  3. If you collect influence and you are already over your cap (i.e. 50/30 influence), you will not get a full influence reward from your next racket, and after that you won't get anything.

  4. I need to check but I think your overage is equal to your biggest influence job. If so, you could build up to any boost from the default. But I need to check this out with a low influence account and my two experimental accounts have over a hundred invested in influence.

  5. I don't see this feature in Mafia Wars. Am I missing something?

  6. Help! I created a new account and it doesn't have rackets! It has the old properties!

  7. @the guy missing something - right now it is new accounts only - it will be given to everyone soon

@the person who got properties again - yup, happens sometimes!

  8. To get the new Rackets, you have to block the app, and stay out of the game for 60 days, according to Zynga. I have the Rackets, but I loaded the game for the first time about a month ago.

  9. The maximum influence you can have is %25 more than your Influence stat (rounded down), just like it is for energy.

  11. one of the weirdest things is going on in my account...i have rackets, but dey are completely different...they are run by money instead of influence...and there are only cash rackets, no oder types...and time frames have also changed...3 card monte run for $250 and gives $500 in 5 mins...i opened a separate account a few days later, and the rackets were again influence based...anyone have a similar situation??

  12. Yes, I also have similar situation. Where do the attack and defense racket go?

  13. I keep working hard shaking down defense rackets and building up my small army of boxers and bullmastiffs but they alays get wittled away again quicker than I can keep them.
Mr hot sauce just costs so much influence the maximum I've ever had is six.
I get attacked a few times and they're gone. It just doesn't feel worth it.

  16. Your racket outcome is mostly in the form of boosts and therefore is placed under that heading.
