Robbing Strategy and Mechanics

Robbing is now in game for all players! Even my rackets account (which still has rackets) can log in and start robbing. Now that I've gotten to play with it some, here is what I have noticed:

1) The amount of Mafia you can use during a robbery attempt depends on which type of property you try to rob.

For example, look at the Dockyard picture above. The "50" number next to the mafia icon shows how many mafia members I can use during my robbery. What this means is that I will only be able to use my 50 best weapons, armors, and vehicles during a robbery attempt on a Dockyard, even if I have a bigger mafia and more weapons. You will be capped at the number indicated on each robbery.

The more expensive the property, the more Mafia Members you can use. For example, you can only use 2 mafia members to rob a flophouse but you can use 50 to rob a dockyard.

2) Equipment stats and stat points are somewhat additive. This picture was taken on my energy account, which has zero extra stat points in attack, yet I still had a much higher attack score than my opponent. It seems that the total offensive score is calculated by:

(Stat points in attack + score from equipment) * a random multiplier (anywhere from 1-3 it would seem).

Sometimes, I will rob a property with an attack score of 15,000, and then rob the same property and have an attack score of 5,000. The "random" element means that anyone at any point can win a robbery (and also lose one!), no matter how much attack, defense, or equipment you have.

There are a few practical results of this:

1) If you want to rob one of the smaller properties (ones where you can only use a few mafia members to help out), such as a flophouse, the fight comes entirely down to who has the most points in attack (or defense).

2) If you rob one of the larger properties, your equipment score vastly outweighs your stat point score.

3) "Special" loot pieces, especially job mastery rewards and Bangkok faction items, now weigh heavily into robbing.

4) Having a full set of good (but not great) loot is only important in robbing larger properties.

5) Attack boosts help out significantly in small robberies and mean nothing in large robberies.

6) Due to the random multiplier, even the weakest accounts will win some robberies, and even the strongest accounts will lose some robberies. While a lot of people don't like the randomly losing, I think the randomness is a good thing as it allows everyone to progress through robbing (i.e. there won't be so much whining from bad players), and since there is no penalty for losing, it doesn't matter too much if you lose once in awhile.

Here is how this comes into play:

1) My "fighting" account will win every small robbery attempt that it makes. Since I have been slacking on finishing content with it, it loses most larger robbery attempts! Missing out on Bangkok faction pieces and job mastery rewards will significantly impair your robbing ability, even if you have 1000 or more points in attack.

2) My energy account will lose every small robbery attempt it makes, but wins most of its larger robberies (where you can use 100+ members), since I have every special item, tons of faction loot, and all the job mastery rewards.

In short, your ability to win fights does not predict your ability to win robbing events. If you want to win all your robbery attempts, you need 1) all the job mastery rewards 2) about 25 of the Yakuza Assassin Bangkok faction items 3) a lot of stat points in attack.

There are no shortcuts here and it is fairly balanced. They did a good job in my opinion in that regard. I will post again later today with more info on the rewards and other robbing information.

  1. There must be a random element to the score calculations, as your 'attack' score can vary even when robbing the same type of property consecutively.

  2. Hi!

Do you want to update the Best Equipment article? I think that is a very useful thread.

    Thanks,

  5. I have between 25 to 50 of each bangkok faction loot, every special vault reward item, and every job mastery item except for bangkok 5A and 5B. I also have 1000+ points in attack and defense. Yet I still lose a lot of heists (my average win per grid is between 6 and 8 -- I only got 9/9 once out of about 10 grids so far). It seems as random to me as when they used to have "critical" hits in fights.

  6. Has anyone gotten loot drops of the two robbing collections? I just started as a Level 3 burglar but having seen any of the collection yet.

  7. I agree with the first comment. There is a random element to the attack score (and defense score of the opponent). And the attack score does not add up to only the weapons/armor/vehicles used plus attack/defense statistic. There must be a random value added and it's range is large. Any ideas about this?

  8. i am lvl 400 and i seem to lose most robberies requiring 2 or 5 member but i winn all above 250 due to my 500+tnt and guerrila squads but why cant i still rob casinos do i have to reach a specific lvl of robbing plz reply mafia wars guide asap

  9. yeah, just noticed the random element and updated myself.

  10. mafia wars guide so i have to reach a specific lvl of robbing to be able to rob mega casinos?also i love the new idea of robing and the ''random element'' for once somthng zynga does is worthwhile

  11. do i have to reach a specific lvl to be able to rob mega casinos like lvl 8 or 10 and im guessin if mega casinos is unlocked it will require 500 mafia members and abt 30 stamina but rewards might be worth it who knws?????

  12. Thanks for updating your post to reflect the random component of attack/defense totals. I think under your practical results section, point 6 where you say, 'even the weakest accounts will lose some robberies' you want to say that even the weakest accounts will *win* some robberies. Cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  13. fixed the weakest part - thanks.

Yes, it seems you need to reach a minimum level to rob casinos. You can still rob them in the person's profile page, but it does not give you experience for doing so.

  14. Where you calculate:

"It seems that the total offensive score is calculated by:
(Stat points in attack + score from equipment) * a random multiplier (anywhere from 1-3 it would seem)"

My observations have been that the random multiplier is anywhere from 0.3-3 (thus far). That is my attack is up to 3 times less than it would normally be based on stat points and equipment. I'm not sure if the range is even wider yet...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yeah, it could be a decimal multiplier. Haven't bothered to calculate exactly, but it seems to vary by about 3 fold (my attack might range from 5000 to 15000 on a certain robbery for example)

  17. any idea on where and when the diamonds are dropped? I have vaulted the tools and finished lvl3 and not seen any diamonds...

    ReplyDelete
  18. ok so I just lost a robbing and I'm not sure how these points add up. I put my attack points and all the stats for the weapons used. Can you figure this out?
    attack 151 (34pts)
    Your items:
    Weapons
    a Harpoon Cannon(88), a Typhoon Cleavers(70)
    Armor
    a Ronin Armor(72), a Tiger Sak Yant(65)
    Vehicles
an Armored War Elephant(96), a Royal Thai Police Tank(58)

  19. Robbing is only worth it if you're looking for more NY money. Loot drop rate is terrible. I'm lvl 404, spent 600 stamina on robbing today and got a couple of armored limos, 1 molotok pistol, and a few other non-essential Moscow loot. An why is it that when you rob a Chop Shop you get 1 car part?? For 15 stamina you could get 3-4 car parts fighting. If you're going to rob a place, why would you take 1 piece and not 20 or 50 at once, or even all they might have?

Any chance robbing will expand to other cities? Or is it just something to keep us in NY after the chop shop craze is over?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Is everyone else seeing a sudden jump in the values computes for attack and defense numbers?
I an 8th jump on the attack number and a smaller jump on the defense number such that attack was suddenly greater than defense. This doesn't seem to be randomly changing but it does appear to be affected by boosts. The changes are affecting fights not just robbing.

  34. forwarding a message since I saw the posts on here...
On my Flying Monkey board there is a story or possible rumor that anyone that used that Phoenix Energy account to get the achievement now cannot use bookmarklets like Chuck O Crap without it sending all of your items to that Phoenix Energy account. Not sure if it is true or not so you may want to let everyone know that Phoenix Energy is possibly a hacker account. They should change their password, clear cookies etc. and take precautions. Could be untrue but better safe than sorry.

  35. I have come to the conclusion that robbing is absolute garbage. The xp payout is terrible (e.g. 5 stamina = 3xp) and the loot drop rate is almost non-existent (78 robbing wins = 1 lock pick). My "reward" for clearing the board was 40xp and an Aguila rifle. Do me a favour!!!
The only benefit is that I managed to get Bulletproof yesterday while everyone was busy wasting their stamina on robbing. I can't see the novelty of robbing lasting very long at this rate.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If you win like 6 or 7 out of 9, robbing is good. It's like minimum for me 1 stamina = 1.6 experience. And got better loot drop also ( vaulted the first collection btw).

And the higher robbery level, the more experience you get. A level 8 has already 15% more experience.

    ReplyDelete
  37. DO NOT CLICK OR ROB those accounts posted above. It is a hack scheme--do it and you'll lose a lot of your loot. There is no free lunch, people. Anon 1:19 is right.

    ReplyDelete
  38. On second thought, robbing has much better experience ratio then energy. For example I got for robbing a mega casino 20 stamina 57 experience. And I guess fearless is now the best character for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  39. i think casinos aren't seen often bc they take 48 hrs to max out and thus probably don't sit uncollected for long. only properties that are maxxed show up in the list.

    also, from the zynga forums:
    http://forums.zynga.com/showthread.php?t=476138

"How are my stats calculated in robbing, is it random?

Your attack stat is static, we then we roll a gigantic die equal to your mafia strength, those get added plus any boosts, and the highest total wins! This same holds true calculating the defense of your opponent. "

  40. In honor of reaching 10 million fans on Facebook, Mafia Wars will be giving away a few tokens of their appreciation starting March 30 (12:01 a.m. PST) to March 31 (11:59 PST).

For 48 hours, Mafia Wars Facebook fans will be able to the following:

    * Double mastery in all cities (New York, Cuba, Moscow and Bangkok)
    * All fights will produce 25% more experience
    * Everyone who plays during this even will receive a limited edition item called the 'Heavy Hand'

    ReplyDelete
  41. Double Mastery in all cities. That rocks - except that I've mastered all cities.

  42. Just noticed, it seems if you are robbed your business income is permanently decreased. Biggest problem is with the business formerly known as mafia mikes, which has to be collected every two hours. Glad I sold almost all of them before the conversion to the new properties system.

  43. Thank you so much for this excellent information! I like the random win/lose as well.

  45. Does anyone know when the Diamond collection starts dropping? Do you have to reach a certain level?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yeah any word on when the diamonds drop? Or is it even harder than the Lotto Collection?

    ReplyDelete
  47. for diamond collection just rob all

    ReplyDelete
  48. The drop rate is just really low.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The drop rate is NON EXSISTENT!

    For me, Level 6.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I also have a problem with the diamond collection not dropping, if it continues I will soon be giving up on it and going back to fighting, instead of wasting stamina collecting useless NY cash.
